How to Survive a Riot: What to do if you find yourself in the Middle of a Riot
We are living through a time of unprecedented violence, chaos, and social unrest. For the last couple of years, we have seen a huge uptick in the number of violent protests and riots. From the chaos and looting in Baltimore and Ferguson to the widespread chaos that’s sweeping throughout Europe and the Middle East, the world seems to have reached a boiling point where one little spark can cause things to go bad rather quickly.
And now, with so much chaos following the latest Presidential cycle, groups throughout the world are looking to capitalize on this anger to help push their ideology of division and social unrest. Because social unrest and violent riots are among top threats we face, you need to have a plan in place to protect yourself and your loved ones from these types of problems. As we’ve witnessed recently, these kinds of violent attacks can break out just about anywhere in the world, even in areas that were once thought to be peaceful.
Social Unrest is a real Threat
Civil disturbances are pretty common in areas of the world with histories of political instability, but up until recently, it wasn’t something that most Americans had to worry about. Unfortunately, we have reached a point in this country where the slightest perceived outrage can quickly escalate into a full-blown riot.
Tensions throughout this country have been high for some time now; between local police forces that look like mini-military units and groups of violent criminals seeking to spread their chaos through fake street demonstrations, these types of events are becoming far too common.
Some things to consider:
- These events can happen anywhere; you must be prepared.
- Situational Awareness and staying informed are both crucial to avoiding problems.
- While some riots are unpredictable, most can be seen coming and will offer signs of impending danger. Street demonstrations, high-profile political rallies, and pending legal decisions on controversial cases are all things you need to watch.
So what should you do if you find yourself in the middle of a full-blown riot?
The first thing that you want to do is quickly assess the situation. These types of events can break out quickly, and over the last couple of years violent flash mobs have even started targeting malls, grocery stores, tourist attractions, and places where you would never expect a riot to break out.
- Are you in immediate danger?
- Where are the quickest routes of escape?
- Is this beginning of something larger?
After assessing the situation, I advise you take the following steps:
If you have an easy way out, take it now
The last thing you want to do is get caught up in the middle of the storm. If you are near an escape route, get out as fast as possible. Also, keep in mind law enforcement has no idea if you are part of the threat, so be careful when approaching police officers.
Become a Grey Man: Look like part of the crowd
If you were not able to make a quick exit, the first thing you want to do is look like you are part of the crowd — something known as becoming a “gray man.”
Don’t do anything stupid that’s going to get you arrested, but you want to look like you are part of the crowd. Now is not the time to voice your opinion, or prove some political point. If someone tries engaging you in conversation, mirror what they are saying and let them think you are on their side.
By blending into the chaos, and not drawing direct attention to yourself, you’re less likely to become a target. Just remember, you are only doing this until you find a safe route out.
Avoid All Law Enforcement
Although this may seem counter-intuitive, you are going to want to avoid law enforcement. The police have absolutely no way of knowing whether you’re a threat or someone who just got caught up in the chaos.
Once the riot police show up, you need to realize that in their eyes you are probably a threat. Once things go bad, you could be hurt by either side, so you need to put space in between yourself and the police line and realize that going towards the police is probably not the best escape plan.
Be aware and ready for an attack
Watch your surroundings and be ready for an attack. Watching the crowd’s body language can help you decide what your next move should be. Scan your surroundings and find the best route of escape. Read our article on defending yourself from multiple attackers.
Don’t get caught up in the chaos
How many times have you been stuck in traffic, only to find out the crash was on the other side? We see it every day, for some reason, people are drawn towards disasters. It’s human nature to want to look at the accident.
Don’t make that mistake during a riot situation. I don’t care how safe or protected you think you are when things start going bad your first priority is to make your way to safety. If you’re that curious about what happened, you can watch the action on the evening news.
Go with the flow
Think of the crowd as a large raging river. The best way to get out of a river is to swim with the current and slowly make your way to the edge. The same is true when stuck in the middle of a crowd.
Don’t try to cut through the crowd, as this could cause unwanted attention. Instead, go with the flow of the crowd and work your way to the edge. Then quietly and slowly slip away to safety — avoid running as it will attract unwanted attention from the crowd and the police who could see you as a threat.
A thought on using your firearm or a weapon: I think always being armed is a good thing, but pulling a gun out in the middle of a riot might not be the smartest idea. Unless you’re physically being attacked, it’s better to slip away unnoticed. Don’t try to scare the crowd away you’re your gun. That being said, if you are physically attacked or threatened with attack, all rules are out the window.

6 Types of Bug Out Maps for Urban Evacuation
I never go anywhere off the pavement without a compass and topographical map of that area. But let’s assume an urban disaster hits scenario, where you need to leave your home. What maps do you need to get to safety? (And don’t just plan to rely on a GPS. They are only as reliable as their batteries, and constant use could mean the unit is soon powerless. Also, any electronic device can break or just quit working.)
Start your navigation plans with a good compass. I prefer one with a clear base plate that is designed to work on maps. Invest in a good one with declination settings, and then learn how to use it. The smaller compasses that come with some survival kits are only useful as backups and for giving you a general direction. The following is a list of types of bug out maps:
City map: Your evacuation from your home will start with this map, so get one with the finest detail possible. This map can help you figure out alternative street evacuation routes if bridges and/or overpasses are closed. Also, gridlock on major highways and freeways is a given, so you might need to plot a course around them.
Survival Expert Warns To Double Down On 2017 Prepping – Terrifying End Game May Await The Unprepared
‘There’s nothing like hunger to ‘inspire’ the angry mobs – it has happened before in history, it will happen again.’
In the new video below featuring former US Army Intelligence operative and survival expert James Wesley Rawles from SurvivalBlog.com along with Dave from the X22Report, we’re told that despite the fact America just dodged a major bullet with Donald Trump’s election, depending on how events develop over the next several months and into the next year, the greatest turmoil may still be ahead of us. Warning us all to kick our prepping into overdrive, Rawles urges us several times to ‘double-down on our preparations’ as he still expects the globalists may try to bring down the global economy between February and November of 2017.

72 HOUR KIT
by Cope Reynolds
In turbulent times, we may be forced to leave our homes temporarily for a few days. Depending on circumstances, we may have to leave immediately at any time during the day or night and having the bare essentials at hand and ready to go at a moment’s notice may mean the difference between life or death to you and your loved ones.
We see all manner of lists that are suggested as necessary for a 72 hour kit. Many of these are unrealistically elaborate, expensive and heavy. Please bear in mind that a 72 hr. kit should be something that you can carry comfortably if you have to evacuate on foot and should contain only a minimal amount of items. All a healthy adult needs to SURVIVE comfortably for 72 hours is a change of clothes, a handful of Granola bars and 2-3 gallons of water. Anything beyond this should be considered carefully. Understanding that the possibility may exist for a longer stay than planned, here are a few suggestions for your kit. Keeping it minimal may even allow you to carry enough supplies for 96 hours or more instead of 72.
Survival. It’s in the genetic code of every living thing. Yes, we’re talking about every living thing in the form of a plant or animal or even a single-cell organism.
Strange, isn’t it?
Since the four seasons also play an important part in their survival, hibernation is a way by which these beasts of the field survive these harsh months.
Another interesting aspect of surviving the winter is the storing up of food, and animals know which foods to pick which can last them for as long as the winter as there won’t be much food to gather during the cold months.
But does this activity of storing food pertain to humans as well?
You can be sure it does… so as to prepare oneself for a natural or man-made disaster!
Survival Food Storage – Tips
I’ve got survival food packed in my Bug Out Bag, but I also know that it is going to run out quickly. That is why one of the most important survival skills to know (whether for camping or the zombie apocalypse) is being able to tell if a plant is edible.
In the ideal world, we’d all get copies of edible plant field guides, and learn every single plant in them. But this just ain’t gonna happen. Even if my memory was good enough to remember all of the edible plants, putting this knowledge to use in survival situations is a lot harder. Lots of edible plants resemble poisonous ones (especially the case with mushrooms), so going on visual ID just isn’t going to cut it. I’m not saying that you shouldn’t memorize edible plants (start with these ones) – but you should also learn the Universal Edibility Test too.
The Universal Edibility Test
The Universal Edibility Test is a series of steps you take to determine whether a plant is poisonous or safe to eat. The idea of the steps is to gradually expose your body to the plant and see if any reaction occurs. This way, if the plant is poisonous, you won’t get it in a high dose and any negative effects will be minimal.
Duct tape has become so popular because of its versatility. Ask anyone who is familiar with the polyethylene-coated, pressure-sensitive roll of adhesive about how they have used it and they will tell you about the many ways it has helped them.
There seems to be an endless supply of projects and anecdotes that one can get from other people about this product. In fact there are even sources online that show you how to make a duct tape wallet!
How about ideas for preppers and survivalists like us? Of course there are plenty as well, and these are good reasons to add a roll or two of this product to your bug out bag or survival kit. When SHTF, you don’t want to be caught without this multi-purpose tape. Check out these cool survival projects you can make.

As an avid backpacker and camper (real backpacking camping and not with a trailer or mobile hotel), I have used super glue to repair tents, backpacks, equipment, and just about everything. Think about all of its uses: it can repair weapons, electronics, tools, and all kinds of things that might break or fail when you really need them to work.
Now there are a few limitations with super glue. Once opened the shelf life is probably only a month, but left unopened it can last a year or more. Make sure you rotate your stock of tubes so you have fresh glue readily available in case of emergency.
